The Cost of Labiaplasty

Date posted: December 30, 2008

One of the big questions for any woman considering a labiaplasty is: “How much will it cost?” The good news is that, compared to other cosmetic procedures, it’s not that much. In fact, although it’s not the least-expensive procedure, it does tend to be one of the lower-priced surgeries. Here’s a list of the most commonly-sought cosmetic-surgery procedures, along with the average cost in the United States. Take a look at the list, and then we’ll discuss some observations: (more…)

Men and Vaginal Cosmetic Surgery

Date posted: December 29, 2008

I frequently hear men poking a little fun at women who opt to have either labiaplasty or vaginaplasty done.  These guys think it’s a little odd for a woman to worry about this (even though presumably they’d be all in favor of the increased sexual performance that the surgery might bring).

How to Tell a Bad Cosmetic Surgeon

Date posted:

Most plastic surgeons are good at what they do–but there are always the few bad ones. This is as true in labiaplasty and vaginaplasty as any other area of cosmetic surgery.

Labiaplasty and Vaginaplasty

Date posted: December 28, 2008

It’s amazing how difficult it is to do research on labiaplasty without coming across the term “vaginaplasty.”  Or how hard it is to find something on vaginaplasty without getting overloaded with information on labiaplasty.  Why is that?  It’s because the procedures are so much alike that to a lot of people, they are the same thing.

Guilt and Vaginal Surgery

Date posted: December 27, 2008

I’ve found that for many women, the whole issue of getting reconstructive surgery on the vagina, whether through vaginaplasty or labiaplasty, is frought with emotional considerations.  First, the reason that so many seek the procedure in the first place is because of negative emotions they hold toward themselves.  Labiaplasty, for insance, is usually sought because of the labia tissue being overgrown.  It becomes an embarrassment to her, especially when she is having a sexual relationship with someone.  Likewise, vaginaplasty is a procedure that helps the woman tighten the vagina to the condition it was prior to her having children.  She does this usually because she this will make her more confident when she is having intercourse.

Self Examination

Date posted:

For women self examination is very important and yet few do it. First, self exam of breasts is important as any lump that is new must be investigated. Usually the nonpainful lump is the one to worry about. Mammograms and sonograms of the breasts should also be done after the age of 30 yo to make sure all is OK.  Examination of one’s skin is also very important. Squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas occur in increasing quantities now that people think they can be longer in the sun because they have a sunscreen on. Wrong. Sunscrean may buy you only 1/2 longer in the sun with same effect if you overdo it than if you had no sunscreen on. Many women like to play tennis, golf, swim or go to the beach with their kids or walk on the beach with their friends. Many like to have lunch outside and many think they look better with a suntan on. Well, the sun is great for our personal well being. It makes things grow, it makes us happy as all is bright and pretty. However, it is very dangerous for our skin. We have to worry about melanoma as well, which is a cancer of our pigment producing cells. It is deadly and devastating and spreads very quickly. Thus self examination of our skin is very important. If you see something unusual in color or if a lesion is growing in size, ask a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist to examin it or maybe take a biopsy.  Same is true of our intestines and ovaries. We should have ovarian sonogram every year, and should also have a colonoscopy especially after the age of 50 yo. Now it brings me to pap smears. Cervical cancer, uterine cancer and vaginal cancer also occur, more often than you think.  Therefore examination of our pelvic areas are just as important.  Sometimes people may get cancer of the vulva, or vagina.  Therefore, you must look and examine your pelvic region not only to see if it looks attractive but also to see if there are any lesions that may look suspicious.  Remember, cancer does not hurt.  Many women also contract vaginal herpes or urethral herpes.  It is cold sores of the vaginal area which is contagious.  There are inflammatory diseases of the pelvis which is very painful, there are some today which develop syphilis especially if they come in contact with someone who was a soldier over seas.  Scabies is another infection that one can get from contact. There are also many other strange lesions that occur in that area so one must look and examine, and question and see a doctor for it.  So self examination is not vanity, but it may save your life.

One Couple's Decision

Date posted: December 24, 2008

My ex-girlfriend first found out about labiaplasty surgery during a lunch with a group of her women friends. I suppose it was an odd topic over chicken salad, but nonetheless, she found herself fascinated by the subject, although at first, she pretended to be slightly disinterested, yet polite. Secretly, it fascinated her and she listened, enthralled. She had no idea that a plastic surgeon would be able to take on her most intimate and delicate of sexual genitalia, the labia minora. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing! Sheryl, the friend who had had the surgery, was surprisingly unembarrassed and gave us all the details as we enjoyed our lunch. What she didn’t know was that my girlfriend had been seriously considering plastic surgery for herself in order to improve our sex life. Sheryl was obviously satisfied. By the end of lunch, she wanted this surgery too. For me, the beautification of this most intimate area appealed far more than a facelift, breast implant or butt lift—all the routine surgeries that everyone seemed to be having these days, surgeries she had actually considered. Like most women, my ex couldn’t afford every surgery or even more than one. The information she learned from our friend that day made up her mind. She chose to have the procedure. Why? For her, the answer was clear and two-fold: confidence in her own body image and increased sexual pleasure for her boyfriend–me. It seemed to her that if she could afford only one surgery, the labiaplasty was certainly the way to go. (more…)

Self exam – a modern taboo?

Date posted:

I often wonder why women look at every part of their body except the vaginal area. The face is examined for every blemish or wrinkle, the neck is examined for every fold or loose skin. the Ears are looked at as to whether they stick out or not. The breasts are evaluated for size and position, the abdomen is squizzed and pulled to evaluate its flatness or extra fat in it. Women look at their buttock and bemoan its descent or its size. Of course, the thighs, we cannot forget the thighs, they are criticized constantly-they stick out too much, they have cellulite, they stick out and in, they are bumpy or lumpy, mushy or wide, shapeless or too shapely with depressions. Of course the skin is massaged, squizzed, lasered, dermabraded, covered with creams, oils, powders, coverups, sun screens, rouge, makeup and billion dollars worth of stuff. Even the rectal area is talked about and evaluated as to the presence of hemorrhoids or tags. Soooo-what happened  to the labia and the vagina? Why are they sooo ignored? The labia minora can be too big, the vagina too stretched and loose, the loose skin from the mons can totally cover the clitoris, the bladder can descent and cause stress incontinence, the labia majora can be very atrophic and loose, long or too plump, and the skin can have various pigmentation or irregularities, yet no one evaluates or talks about this publicly. Matter of fact most women find it embarrasing to look at themselves, or to admit that they did. Why is this so? Somehow, looking at ones own private parts has become a taboo for women. Yet, babies come from there and babies are born as a consequence of using that part to create them. Romance or attraction between sexes eventually culminates in sexual encounters which is all about the use of the private parts. So why it is so hard to talk and look at that area? Why do so many women feel it is ugly and do not want to look? Yet we can make the area pretty if we think it is ugly but most women do not know enough as to how it supposed to look to evaluate whether it should be improved. I think this should be changed, and the only way one will change it if we all talk about it and learn more about the female anatomy how it looks, and how it works and understand all the functions and reasons for malfunction. So this blog is for all the women who never looked, those that want to look and those that looked and want to know more about it.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Cream an Alternative ?

Date posted: December 23, 2008

It had to happen:  A Santa-Monica OB-GYN has invented a cream–That’s right, a cream, that she says makes vaginoplasty unnecessary.

The cream’s creator is Terralynn Hoy, who created a product called Pk24.  She said she did so after she heard men talking about how a relaxed vagina has negatively affected their sex lives with their female partners.  This tightness vs. looseness is the main selling point for many women to getting vaginal reconstructive surgery.  But Hoy says her cream tightens a woman’s inner vaginal walls in order to enhance her sexual experience.

The cream itself seems a mix of the natural and chemical. It contains aloe barbadensis leaf, alum potassium, glycerin, sodium citrate, and for flavor, sucralose, as well as the preservatives proplyparaben and methylparaben.

So what’s not to like, right?  After hearing about this product, who in their right mind would spend the money and time for a labiaplasty?

It turns out, plenty.  For a couple of reasons.  First, nobody is quite sure just how the cream supposedly tightens the vaginal muscles–and therefore, nobody is sure just yet if it actually works, or if it’s just a “placebo effect.”  Second, the product itself only claims to work for 24 hours.  This means you need a new application any time you plan to have sexual intercourse. And, of course, it means plenty of money for the cream’s manufacturer. True, a surgical procedure costs a lot more money. But it’s a one-time thing.  After that, the expense, the time and the inconvenience are finished. And most importantly, you can be sure it’s a “product” that has been verified as working.  As of yet, vaginal tightening creams are still experimental–and not yet “ready for primetime.”
